A new peer-reviewed study in Nature Communications Medicine highlights the shift in brain MRI from fixed, one-size-fits-all contrast protocols to real-time, AI-informed decisions. Cerebriu’s Apollo SmartGAD analyzes images as they’re acquired and recommends one of three protocols: non-enhanced, reduced-dose, or standard-dose gadolinium contrast, tailored to each patient’s scan.
This turns what was once a static, upfront call into a dynamic, in-scan recommendation available while the patient is still on the table, when it can actually change what happens next. Across 1,251 exams from two clinically distinct patient groups, the algorithm identified contrast-free cases with 73% sensitivity, 79% specificity, and 86% negative predictive value, and supported the more nuanced glioma monitoring decision with 77% sensitivity and 78% specificity.
The authors conclude that workflow-integrated, real-time AI can meaningfully support contrast administration decisions in brain MRI, rationalizing contrast use while preserving diagnostic quality.
That’s a win on three fronts at once: patient safety, clinical efficiency, and cost and sustainability.
